Madrid, 13 December 2016. Spanish satellite and telecommunications operator HISPASAT will provide space capacity for the transmission in Latin America of Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos receiving the 2016 Nueva Economía Fórum Award. The ceremony will be held tomorrow at the Teatro Real in Madrid and will be presided over by Spanish president Mariano Rajoy. Transmission of the event will be made through the transponder of the Hispasat 30W-5 satellite, which provides coverage in the Americas, Europe and North Africa.

The award, granted to the Republic of Colombia’s head of state, has previously been presented to the presidents of Italy, Portugal, Mexico, Chile and Brazil, among others, and recognises the “deep and long-lasting friendship and cooperation with Spain in economic, social and political spheres”. Likewise, it recognises the “efforts of Juan Manuel Santos and Colombian society in achieving their long-awaited peace and in facing future challenges of economic and social development”.

The only satellite operator with offices in Colombia

HISPASAT is the main operator in Latin America for the distribution of content in Spanish and Portuguese, and over the last few years it has strengthened its presence in Colombia. In December 2013, the temporary joint venture between HISPASAT and NEC successfully won the bid of Colombia’s Ministry of Information Technologies and Communication to install, operate and manage 648 digital kiosks in seven provinces in the country as part of the second stage of the Kioscos Vive Digital initiative, the objective of which is to ensure that 100% of the towns with over 100 inhabitants in Colombia have at least one communal Internet access point. Since then, the Amazonas, Boyacá, Caldas, Cundinamarca, Guainía, Risaralda and Vaupés provinces have been given access to the Internet, national and international telephone services, computer literacy and electronic government, among many others.

Moreover, HISPASAT is the only satellite operator that, since late 2013, has offices in Colombia (Bogotá), and is the cofounder of the Colombian Satellite Association.
