AUDIOVISUAL SERVICES
1. DIRECT-TO-HOME (DTH) TELEVISION BROADCASTING
Direct-to-home Broadcasting, DTH services, enable television and radio channels to be received directly from satellites to home antennas.
Satellite DTH ensures robust and reliable communications when it comes to delivering audiovisual TV platform content to end users more efficiently.
HISPASAT has around 5.9 DTH users, broadcasting 1,041 channels from 30º, 55º and 61º West orbit positions.
HISPASAT participation in the SAT>IP standard is also included as part of the DTH services. SAT-IP is the standard that aspires to unify the different distribution technologies like internet and satellite.
Distribution of DTH channels by orbital position.
2. DISTRIBUTION
HISPASAT provides distribution services for 120 radio and TV channels through the coverage offered by all of its satellites and in any form of connectivity: Europe-Europe, America-America, Europe-America and America-Europe.
In distribution services, once content is received and processed in the satellite broadcasting centre, it is broadcast by the satellite and received and transmitted through terrestrial networks: UHF/VHF, cable systems, microwave systems, etc. HISPASAT, together with its collaborators, provides broadcasting services that can combine satellite and terrestrial technologies thus enabling it to provide high-quality and high availability service for its clients.
3. SOCIAL DTH AND DTT
HISPASAT provides a TV signal broadcasting service geared towards homes in white space areas. Indeed, HISPASAT satellites complement digital terrestrial television services in countries like Spain, Portugal and Chile.
4. CINEMA
The HISPASAT and Telespazio solution for distributing digital cinema ensures content integrity and its protection against falsifications and piracy. Based on a two-way content transfer system, it has been a great success in Italy.
5. CONTRIBUTION / OCCASIONAL USE
HISPASAT provides a contribution service that encompasses content transmission from ground stations, either fixed or itinerant, to other ground stations, normally fixed and known as central ground stations, to be subsequently processed.
Its occasional services provide satellite capacity for satellite contribution from portable ground stations (DSNGs, Flyaways) for limited time fractions, offering a high-quality and high availability service.
Moreover, HISPASAT occasional services enable IP connectivity for several hours with full bandwidth ensured.
6. UHDTV (4K)
HISPASAT remains committed to the development of UHDTV (4K) technology.
UHDTV (4K) implies multiplying HDTV resolution by four, thus its success will serve to strengthen the role of satellites in TV broadcasting platforms. At present, HISPASAT has two 4K channels on its DTH servic
DATA SERVICES
1. IP TRUNKING
Communications often share large volumes of information between isolated or distant points, which is common for trunk networks. In these cases, ground solutions are expensive to implement.
HISPASAT satellites offer network operators the possibility of creating high-capacity trunk links. The availability of these links is ensured through the monitoring systems at the company’s control centres.
HISPASAT can establish backup links via satellite for clients that need to ensure service continuity, thus guaranteeing the maximum availability of their communications networks
2. CELLULAR BACKHAUL
HISPASAT’s satellite fleet offers mobile telephone network operators flexibility to deploy or expand their networks in time- and cost-efficient ways, connecting remote or inaccessible locations via satellite.
As a complement to this service, HISPASAT offers its customers a global solution for the deployment of their networks, including backbone network connections and IP access, based on the needs for each project.
HISPASAT has over 2,000 BTS connected through its satellite fleet. This service is mainly provided by HISPASAT in North and South America, particularly in Peru, Brazil and the USA.
Moreover, in those regions where HISPASAT has Ku and Ka bands available, the company is promoting hybrid cellular backhaul solutions to leverage the intrinsic characteristics of each frequency band.
3. INTERNET ACCESS
A satellite communications link can be used by telecommunications operators to provide direct and secure access to the internet backbone, thereby offering broadband connectivity to clients:
- In neglected areas, thus favouring universal internet access.
- Eliminating congestion on current networks.
- Cutting costs caused by reserving lines or fibre optic.
HISPASAT provides this service by means of:
SPACE CAPACITY: HISPASAT provides satellite capacity (MHz) while operators look after deploying the requisite infrastructure to provide the service.
MANAGED SERVICES: HISPASAT provides an end-to-end solution by offering bandwidth capacity (Mbps) through its communications platforms.
This is a Virtual Network Operator (VNO) solution in which:
- The client acts as a VNO and remotely accesses the HISPASAT platform to automatically provide its services to end users.
- HISPASAT acts as a Hosting Network Operator (HNO) and sells capacity: Bandwidth slots (Mbps).
- The end-user terminals are the responsibility of the client, who can buy, install, maintain and register them on platforms.
Other internet access applications:
VoIP and video-conference: HISPASAT platforms enable operators to offer a VoIP service through data prioritisation protocols. HISPASAT offers engineering and support services for clients to configure end user terminals to ensure voice/video-conference priority (real time service) over data.
Television and multicast data: Geared to clients that need to distribute content cost effectively to particular points in a specific region. The content is encapsulated in IP on broadband platforms to be later uploaded to the satellite and then distributed to the end user.
Unlimited browsing: HISPASAT has developed a solution to enable client traffic filtering by protocol. This advanced fee management solution, which aims to improve user experience, makes it possible not to account for the data browsing volume and email consultation in the client’s monthly fee.
4. TRIPLE PLAY
HISPASAT’s triple play solution via satellite enables voice, video and data services to be implemented with a single user antenna operating in the same orbital position.
This is the ideal solution to receive TV services on the Ku band and the transmission and reception of data services on Ka.
5. INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)
HISPASAT offers space capacity services and services managed for telemetry and remote control systems that enable the remote measurement of physical quantities and parameters, and subsequently send information to the system operator.
Satellite services in the IoT sector have numerous uses in the energy industry:
- Water basins
- Wind farms
- Oil rigs
- Smart cities
hiSky Platform: HISPASAT and hiSky signed an agreement in 2017 to provide low-capacity MSS and IoT services using the Ka band of HISPASAT satellites.
It will be possible to provide these services in remote and mobility environments (such as ships, connected cars, trains, etc.) by means of a small, compact and portable friendly antenna that can be automatically connected to the satellite.
6. HOTSPOT WIFI
As an alternative to the internet access service, HISPASAT and its partners are offering solutions to provide WiFi access network connectivity (so-called “hotspots”).
The WiFi hotspot solution provides connectivity in public areas, such as libraries, pavilions, town councils, etc., thus enabling the provision of value-added services to the general public.
This service includes residential WiFi hotspots to provide broadband services to houses in the surrounding areas. As a solution it serves to provide homes located within the coverage range with an internet connection that may or not have equipment to boost the WiFi signal.
7. MOBILITY
The excellence of HISPASAT satellite attributes, along with the global coverage provided in the three big operation regions (North-Central America, South America and the EMEA) enables the company to offer top quality, efficient and high service availability mobility services.
Space capacity services for mobility are divided into three main groups in relation to the market goals of each one:
Maritime: For commercial vessels, fishing boats, oil platforms, yachts, etc. In this sector it is worth mentioning the positive contributions of HISPASAT on maritime routes: on the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
Ground: Trains, buses and other ground transport. HISPASAT is leading provider of railway mobility solutions in this market.
Aeronautical: Commercial and military airplanes, UAVs and helicopters.
VNO mobility services (sea and railway):
HISPASAT offers VNO (Virtual Network Operator) mobility platform services for mobility clients. The main solution marketed is based on platforms with technical services and certifications adapted to mobile scenarios.
Go Mobile
As a complement to the VNO platform for mobility services, HISPASAT, together with several strategic partners, developed the product Go Mobile. This is an advanced platform including different services mainly geared towards train and commercial vessel operators that require a “turnkey” product with a complete range of services:
- Internet access service: Internet access via satellite that can be combined with other technologies (3G, 4G).
- VoD: Video on demand services stored on internal servers that are updated periodically.
- Video multicast: TV channels broadcasted via satellite, in IP to be distributed to passengers.

8. EMERGENCIES
Satellites play a vital role in emergencies. The ability to deploy critical communications services in a quick and easy manner during a catastrophe makes satellites an ideal resource for these types of situations.
In this context, there are several scenarios where satellites may be used for emergencies:
- Restoring communications during a catastrophe: In this case, architecture similar to an IP trunking or Internet access is often implemented.
- Backhauling of emergency terrestrial networks: Solutions that complement TETRA, 3G-4G, WIMAX services in these scenarios.
- Communications emergency-related mobile resources: Applies to means of transport by land, air and sea.
This service is marketed in the following ways:
VNO SLOT: Clients have a VNO slot on one of the broadband platforms, just like the model for other services such as internet access.
OCCASIONAL IP: Clients pay a reserve sum (to be agreed) that guarantees capacity availability over a particular period.
HISPASAT offers the following products in the emergencies area:
ONTIME EASY DEPLOY: This solution comprises of a broadband terminal and an Easy Deploy antenna. It is ideal for terrestrial network backhauling such as Tetra or WIMAX, as well as for offering connectivity to advance command posts when managing emergencies and natural disasters.
