Launch of AMAZONAS 4A

On 22 March 2014, HISPASAT Group put the Amazonas 4
satellite into orbit. The fleet’s
eleventh satellite was launched from the European Space
Agency’s base, located in Kourou (French Guiana),
onboard Arianespace’s Ariane 5 ECA launch vehicle.

After the successful launch of the satellite and its subsequent positioning in geostationary orbit, an anomaly was detected in the satellite’s performance and traced to its power subsystem, affecting the available capacity. At that moment, a contingency plan was to put into operation to ensure uninterrupted service to customers. Moreover, the economic impact on HISPASAT Group was minimal due to the satellite’s insurance policy, which covers these types of incidents.

Amazonas 4A’s affected capacity will be compensated by the capacity that will be offered by Amazonas 5, which is currently being built.

The Amazonas 4A, which was manufactured by Orbital on the basis of its Geostar 2.4e platform, featured significant involvement from the Spanish industrial sector.
