DTH – DIRECT TO HOME

Direct-to-Home Broadcasting (DTH) services enable television and radio channels to be received directly from satellites to home antennas. Satellite DTH ensures robust and reliable communications when it comes to delivering audiovisual TV platform content to end users more efficiently.

HISPASAT has developed flexible, shared-risk models for small DTH operators, who receive income based on the number of subscribers.

These services include the participation of HISPASAT in the SAT>IP standard, a technology that allows the distribution of content via satellite to all screens in the home through its conversion to the IP protocol.

UHDTV (4K)

HISPASAT is contributing to developing UHDTV technology (4K Ultra High Definition Television).

UHDTV 4K implies multiplying HDTV (High Definition Television) resolution by four, so its success will serve to strengthen the role of satellites in television broadcasting platforms. At present, HISPASAT has two 4K channels on its DTH service.

DISTRIBUTION

HISPASAT provides distribution services for 136 TV channels and 70 radio channels within the coverage offered by all its satellites and across all forms of connectivity: Europe-Europe, America-America, Europe-America and America-Europe.

In distribution services, once content is received and processed in the satellite broadcasting centre, it is broadcast by the satellite and received and transmitted through terrestrial networks: UHF/VHF, cable systems, microwave systems, etc.

HISPASAT, together with its partners, provides transmission services that can combine satellite technology with terrestrial technologies in order to enable a high-quality, readily available service for customers.

DTT & SOCIAL DTH

HISPASAT provides a TV signal broadcasting service geared towards homes in white space areas.

Indeed, HISPASAT satellites complement Digital Terrestrial Television services (DTT) in countries like Spain, Portugal and Chile.

CONTRIBUTION

HISPASAT provides a contribution service that encompasses content transmission from ground stations, either fixed or itinerant, to other ground stations, normally fixed and known as central ground stations, to be subsequently processed.

HISPASAT’s occasional services provide satellite capacity for satellite contribution from portable ground stations (DSNGs, Flyaways) for limited time fractions, offering a high-quality and readily available service.

In addition, HISPASAT occasional services enable IP connectivity for hours with full bandwidth ensured.

Contribution services broadcast live events using HISPASAT satellites.

HYBRID DTH PLATFORM NEW VIDEO ON DEMAND SERVICE VIA SATELLITE

In 2019 HISPASAT, working alongside Panaccess and Network Broadcast, has worked on defining a new TV platform concept that combines linear television services with a new VoD service (PUSH VoD).

It is of particular interest for those users that do have limited Internet connectivity.

The main features of the solution are:

  • Offers VoD services to users without broadband.
  • No return channel required.
  • Efficient content delivery (multicast).
  • Compatible with DVB and can be integrated with DTH platforms and other solutions on board trains, planes and boats (transport sphere).
  • Modular design, can be integrated with STB using existing CAS.
  • Compatible with any video or audio format supported by the processor.
  • Easily integrated with other technologies.

DATA

IP TRUNKING

Communications often share large volumes of information between isolated or distant hot-spots, which is common for trunk networks. In these cases, ground solutions are expensive to implement.

HISPASAT satellites offer network operators the option to create high-capacity trunk links. The availability of these links is ensured through monitoring systems at the company’s control centres.

HISPASAT can establish backup links via satellite for customers that need to ensure service continuity, thus guaranteeing the maximum availability of their communications networks.

CELLULAR BACKHAUL

HISPASAT’s satellite fleet offers mobile telephone network operators flexibility to deploy or expand their networks in time- and cost-efficient ways, connecting remote or inaccessible locations via satellite.

As a complement to this service, HISPASAT is able to offer its customers a global solution for the deployment of their networks, including backbone network connections and IP access, based on the needs for each project.

Moreover, in those regions where HISPASAT has Ku and Ka band capacity available, the company is promoting hybrid cellular backhaul solutions to leverage the intrinsic characteristics of each frequency band.

Likewise, HISPASAT can provide connectivity services to base stations through the use of managed service platforms operated from different control centres and teleports, both its own and those of third parties.

HISPASAT has over 2,400 stations connected through its satellite fleet. This service is mainly provided by HISPASAT in North and South America, particularly in Peru, Brazil and the USA.

INTERNET ACCESS

A satellite communications link can be used by telecommunications operators to provide direct and secure access to the internet backbone, thereby offering broadband connectivity to clients:

  • In neglected areas, thus favouring universal internet access.
  • Eliminating congestion on current networks.
  • Cutting costs caused by reserving lines or fibre optic.

BROADBAND TERMINALS

In managed services, the solution is based on a Virtual Network Operator (VNO) in which:

  • The client acts as a VNO and remotely accesses the HISPASAT platform to automatically provide its services to end users.
  • HISPASAT acts as a Hosting Network Operator (HNO) and sells dedicated capacity: Bandwidth slots (Mbps).
  • The end-user terminals are the client’s responsibility, and they can buy, install, maintain and register them on platforms.

In 2019, HISPASAT implemented a new broadband platform aimed at providing managed Ka band services in Chile, Colombia and Argentina.

At the same time, HISPASAT has developed shared risk models to facilitate the commercial launch of Internet access service providers, based on pay-per-use plans.

OTHER INTERNET ACCESS APPLICATIONS

VoIP and video-conference:HISPASAT platforms enable operators to offer a VoIP service through data prioritisation protocols. HISPASAT offers engineering and support services for customers to configure end user terminals to ensure voice/video-conference priority (real time service) over data services.


Television and multicast data: Geared to clients that need to distribute content cost effectively to particular hot-spots in a specific region. The content is encapsulated in IP on our broadband platforms to be later uploaded to the satellite and then distributed by radio (Broadcast) to the end user.

Unlimited browsing: HISPASAT has developed a solution to enable client traffic filtering by protocol. With this the user experience is improved, because the volume of data from pure browsing and e-mail is not deducted from the contracted monthly allowance. Only high consumption applications are counted and users can browse and check their e-mail at the nominal contracted speed, even when they go over their monthly allowance.

TRIPLE PLAY

This service enables triple play (voice, video and data) services to be implemented with a single user antenna operating in the same orbital position.

  • Reception of TV services via Ku band.
  • Transmission and reception of data services via Ka.

INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

HISPASAT offers space capacity services and broadband platforms for telemetry and remote control systems that enable the remote measurement of physical quantities and parameters, and subsequently send information to the system operator.

In 2019 a collaboration agreement was reached with the company HISPATEC to provide software and Smart Agro solutions for all links in the food chain.
The agreement consists of joint marketing of solutions to agri-food industry players, encouraging the various stakeholders in the value chain to adopt these technologies.

HiSky

HISPASAT and HiSky have an agreement to provide low-capacity MSS and IoT services using the Ka band of HISPASAT satellites.
These services can be offered in remote locations and in transport contexts (such as on ships, in connected cars, trains, etc.).
HiSky offers two kinds of terminal: static and dynamic (available since 2019).
The service is available in Europe through the platform installed at HISPASAT’s Arganda teleport.
The service was rolled out in Mexico in 2019 and the first tests of the dynamic terminal were carried out.

WIFI HOT-SPOTS BY SATELLITE

As an alternative to the internet access service, HISPASAT and its partners are offering solutions to provide WiFi access network connectivity (HotSpots).

The WiFi HotSpot solution provides connectivity in public areas, such as libraries, pavilions, town halls etc., thus enabling the provision of value-added services to the general public.

The installation of these WiFi hot-spots via satellite provides Internet access to an area where it can be used to offer services such as smart farming solutions, distance education, e-government, e-health, video, etc.

This service includes the solution of residential WiFi hot-spots to provide residential broadband services to homes.

This solution is based on a WiFi hot-spots that provides homes located within the coverage range, whether or not they have equipment to boost the WiFi signal, with an Internet connection.

TELE-EDUCATION

Together with “DIGISAT”, HISPASAT is offering a tele-education solution that allows for the creation of a service that is accessible from local centres, enabled through the local content server or from any location with an Internet connection, through an exclusive web portal.

FEATURES OF THE DISTANCE LEARNING SYSTEM

  • It allows mass sending of content to the tele-education system (multicast) during non-school hours in the afternoon/evening and during holidays, when students are not using the satellite connection.
  • During class time the broadband is configured to refresh websites with changing information and the rest is reserved for video conferencing and browsing online.
  • It offers educational content to distance learners who can connect to the system from anywhere with Internet access.

LOCAL CONTENT SERVER

Local server that stores educational content and provides access to this content. Students can access it from local centres (universities, schools and others) through the local content server. The content is cached on the server at set times of lower consumption of satellite bandwidth through the VSAT terminal.

Online distance learning users can access training through an exclusive web portal from anywhere that has an Internet connection.

MOBILITY

Maritime: For commercial vessels, fishing boats, oil rigs, yachts, etc. In this sector it is worth mentioning the positive contributions of HISPASAT to maritime routes in the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

SYNTELIX

In 2019, together with the maritime services provider Syntelix, HISPASAT has defined a catalogue of products to jointly market in Latin America and the Caribbean under a pay-as-you-go model.

A flexible business model was developed that reduces risk for the integrator, a distributor of maritime services, facilitating its roll-out and the development of its market access strategy.

VODOMEDIA

HISPASAT, in 2019, sealed agreements with Vodomedia to supply Push VoD services to the maritime market under a pay-per-boat model. In this way, content is distributed to boats on an on demand basis to provide entertainment services on board. This solution complements connectivity solutions (MHz and Mbps) to clients in the maritime sector, offering complete video and data solutions.

The technical solution is based on QuadriFast technology from Quadrille, who are tasked with pushing content on the receiving device. For the client, all they need is to have a satellite reception antenna and a Set Top Box. The solution is compatible with i-Direct maritime connectivity services.

Trains, buses and other ground transport. In this market it is worth highlighting HISPASAT as a leading provider of mobility solutions in the railway sector.

HISPASAT offers VNO (Virtual Network Operator) mobility platform services for mobility clients. The main solution marketed is based on platforms with technical services and certifications adapted to mobile settings.

EMERGENCIES

Satellites play a vital role in emergencies. The ability to quickly and easily deploy a critical communications service during a disaster makes satellites an ideal means for these types of services.

In this context, there are several scenarios where satellites may be used for emergencies:

  • Restoring communications during a catastrophe: in this case, architecture similar to IP trunking or Internet access is usually implemented.
  • Backhaul for terrestrial emergency networks: solutions that complement TETRA, 3G-4G, and WIMAX services in these situations.
  • Communications for mobile units involved in the emergency: this applies to terrestrial, aerial and maritime units.
  • SAT on the Pause communications in emergencies and security situations: solutions designed to provide broadband connectivity in remote locations, which facilitate the deployment of communications.

VNO SLOT:
Customers have a VNO slot on one of the broadband platforms, along the same lines as the model for other services such as Internet access.

OCCASIONAL IP:
Clients pay a reserve sum (to be agreed) that guarantees capacity availability over a particular period.

AGREEMENT WITH GETSAT

HISPASAT has signed an agreement with GETSAT to develop services for transport, emergencies and defence.

GETSAT’s Sat on the Move terminal means that links can be established quickly and efficiently in mobility scenarios.

AGREEMENT WITH OVZON

In 2019 an agreement was signed with Ovzon to market SAT on the Pause services for the emergencies and security market.

The Ovzon T5 is an all-in-one broadband terminal the size of a laptop computer that provides access to high performance satellite broadband services on the Ku band. Deployment, alignment and transmission are very simple – they can be done in a matter of minutes (<5 minutes). Its graphic interface offers users complete control via a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

OTHER SOLUTIONS

RF MEASUREMENTS:

Functionality built in to SIGO (Integrated Operations Management System) that allows the measurement of different radio frequencies for customers’ carriers:

  • Peak: maximum level adjustment for the carrier.
  • POL: polarisation adjustment.
  • During 2019 the service was opened up in such a way that customers can verify its interferences.

The service uses the redundant fleet monitoring infrastructure to take measurements.

It allows customers to autonomously verify the correct alignment, reducing the risk of interference and making it possible to deploy a network quickly.

HOUSING:

HISPASAT has additional infrastructure at its telecommunications centres to provide a housing service to those clients who need to install additional equipment to provide services to their end customers in:

  • Caxias Do Sul Teleport (Brasil).
  • Ixtlahuaca Teleport (México).
