13 short films shot and post-produced in 4k have been selected as finalists in the festival's first edition.
The five winning films will be announced at the closing night ceremony, held on November 12, 2015 at the Callao cinema in Madrid.
At a press conference held this morning in Madrid, the finalists of the HISPASAT 4K International Film Festival were announced. The festival is one of the first film competitions in the world to exclusively feature short films shot and post-produced in 4K. The thirteen finalists are:

- JOSÉ ALFREDO, by Eduardo Chapero-Jackson (Spain, 2015, 16’ 30’’)
- LAST MEMORY, by Juan Luis Moreno Somé (Spain, 2015, 9’)
- MARINA, by Álex Montoya (Spain, 2010, 13’39’’)
- MARTES Y SOMBRAS, by Sergio Diez (Spain, 2014, 10’)
- MODERNIDAD, by Roberto Barba (Peru, 2014, 16’)
- NOS PRIMAVERA SOUND 2014 4K EXPERIENCE, by Joana Domingues and Julio Llorente (Portugal, 2015, 8’24’’)

A total of 72 short films from 11 different countries were submitted to the first edition of this ground-breaking festival. The call for entries was open to films produced in any country, in any genre, with a maximum length of 20 minutes and shot and post-produced in 4K.
The finalists will be competing for the following categories and awards:
- HISPASAT AWARD FOR BEST SHORT FILM: €3,000 + Samsung SUHD TV.
- SAMSUNG SUHD AWARD FOR BEST LATIN AMERICAN SHORT FILM: €1,000 + Samsung SUHD TV.
- RTVE AWARD FOR BEST SHORT FILM FROM A FILM ACADEMY: €1,000 + 2 scholarships in 4K specialisation at the RTVE Institute.
- CANON AWARD FOR BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: €1,000 + Canon 4K camera.
- DOLBY AWARD FOR BEST SOUND: €1,000 + ATMOS mastering.
The members of the jury for this competition are: Ignacio Sanchis (HISPASAT CCO), Ana Risueño (actress), Enrique López Lavigne (producer), Samuel Martín Mateos (RTVE director of Culture and Society), Alfredo Pérez (Content Coordinator at Samsung Electronics Iberia), Miguel Ángel Doncel (CEO of SGO), Guillermo Niño (Senior Manager for Broadcast, OTT and Home Video at Dolby Laboratories) and Javier Martín García (Canon Product Manager).
The five winning films will be announced at the closing night ceremony, held on November 12, 2015 at the Callao City Lights cinema in Madrid. During the ceremony, the audience will be able to view the award-winning films in 4K, as well as the premiere of a short film on El Rastro directed by Rosa Ofelia García and produced by RTVE, shot and post-produced exclusively in Ultra High Definition (UHD).
Two round table discussions will also be held on November, 12 at the Palacio de la Prensa in Madrid, in which a group of leading experts will analyse the present and future of Ultra High Definition. The talks will be open to the public and held at the following times.
The Spanish satellite communications operator HISPASAT, leader in distribution of content in Spanish and Portuguese, organised this international festival with the aim of promoting the creation and screening of audiovisual content recorded in 4K, or Ultra High Definition (UHD), the latest technological revolution in the audiovisual sector.
This initiative involves the collaboration and sponsorship of Samsung SUHD televisions and cutting-edge audiovisual technology companies, such as RTVE, Dolby, Canon, SGO, AdHoc Studios, Callao City Lights cinema in Madrid and producer Heavents.
