SOLUTION AND SERVICES

1.1 DIRECT-TO-HOME (DTH) TELEVISION BROADCASTING
Direct-to-home Broadcasting (DTH) services enable television and radio channels to be received directly from satellites to home antennas.
DTH via satellite ensures robust and reliable communications in order to efficiently deliver audiovisual content to end users and reducing the costs associated with network deployment.
From 30º West, HISPASAT broadcasts the DTH signal from the Digital+ platforms in Spain and Zon and MEO in Portugal with around 0.7 million subscribers. In Europe, HISPASAT has more than 1 million Pay-TV subscribers and more than 600 TV and radio channels, of which 192 are free-to-air.
Originating from 61º West, the DTH signal is broadcast from the Claro TV, Oi and Telefónica platforms in Latin America, with 5.2 million subscribers and 617 TV channels.

1.2 DISTRIBUTION

HISPASAT provides radio and TV distribution services through the coverage by all of its satellites and in any form of connectivity: Europe-Europe, America-America, Europe-America, America-Europe.
In distribution services, once content is received and processed in the satellite broadcasting centre, it is broadcast by the satellite and received and transmitted through terrestrial networks: UHF/VHF, cable systems, microwave systems, etc.
HISPASAT, together with its collaborators, provides transmission services that can combine satellite technology with terrestrial technology in order to enable high-quality service for customers.
HISPASAT offers service to 1,174 cable headends via the 30º West orbital position, with content reaching more than 50 million homes in Europe and America.
HISPASAT’s distribution services include: DTT distribution, shared digital Platforms, global digital platforms, digital cinema distribution and 4K distribution platforms.

Success stories: In 2016, HISPASAT signed a contract with the operator Telespazio to distribute audiovisual content via satellite to 600 cinemas in Italy. The agreement allows this content to be transmitted on the Ku band via the Hispasat 30W-5 satellite and Telespazio’s Fucino teleport, near Rome.

1.3 CONTRIBUTION

This service consists of content transmission from ground stations, either fixed or itinerant, to other ground stations, normally fixed and known as central ground stations, to later be processed.
These services may be occasional with capacity sales for the contribution to the satellite from itinerant ground stations for limited fractions of time, or occasional IPs, where services are provided through the HISPASAT’s  Broadband platforms, offering products with different bandwidths for limited fractions of time.

1.4 UHDTV

2.1.  CELULAR BACKHAUL

HISPASAT’s satellite fleet offers mobile telephone network operators flexibility to deploy their networks in time- and cost-efficient ways, connecting remote or inaccessible locations via satellite. The solution enables the time spent on extending networks required for a cellular network to be optimised.
The number of base stations that can be connected is easily scalable, and the solution can be adapted to the different network needs of each client.
As a complement to this service, HISPASAT offers its customers a global solution for the deployment of their networks, including backbone network connections and IP access, based on the needs for each project.

CURRENT BACKHAUL SERVICE CLIENTS

2.1. HYBRID BACKHAUL

The growth of mobile networks and the corresponding technological migration
from 2G to 3G and 4G, demand great capacity for these types of networks. In this context the Ka band is an attractive alternative for operators. However, the high availability requirements for backhauling services (especially voice services) make the implementation of solutions using solely the Ka band difficult for some regions with high levels of rain, so it is necessary to complement them with the Ka band.
In regions where HISPASAT has availability on the Ku band and Ka band, the company is providing hybrid backhaul solutions which take advantage of the intrinsic characteristics of each band:

ADVANTAGES OF HYBRID CELLULAR BACKHAUL SERVICE FOR EACH BAND

2.2. IP TRUNKING

Communications often share large volumes of information between isolated or distant points, which is common for trunk networks. In these cases, ground solutions are expensive to implement.
HISPASAT satellites offer network operators the possibility of creating high-capacity trunk links. The availability of these links is ensured through the monitoring systems at the company’s control centres.

2.3. BROADBAND ACCESS
Satellite telecommunications services can be used by telecommun ications operators to offer direct and secure access to the Inte rnet, thereby offering broadband connectivity to clients:
• Providing neglected areas with universal Internet access.
• Eliminating congestion or lack of capacity on current networks.
HISPASAT provides their clients with two commercial models for broadband services:

• Space capacity (MHz), in this case the client is in charge of deploying all ground infrastructure (IP platforms) which enable Internet access via satellite.
• Services managed through HISPASAT broadband platforms: in this case HISPASAT provides an end-to-end service which provides clients with Internet access using ground infrastructure deployed by the company. This service is offered on the basis of a VNO (Virtual Network Operator), service architecture.
The service, based on a VNO model, consists of:
• The client acting as a VNO and having remote access to the HISPASAT platform to automatically provide its services to end users.
• HISPASAT acting as a Hosting Network Operator (HNO) and selling capacity: Bandwidth slots (Mbps).
• The end-user terminals are the responsibility of the client, who can buy, install, maintain and register them on HISPASAT platforms.
Currently, HISPASAT has opted for three broadband technologies, through which it offers Internet access to operators with platforms of STM, Gilat or i-Direct.

2.4. TRIPLE PLAY SERVICES VIA SATELLITE

HISPASAT’s triple play solution via satellite enables voice, video and data services to be implemented with a single antenna operating in the same orbital position. This solution has the following objectives:
• To position HISPASAT as a provider of triple play solutions via satellite in a market with high potential.
• Promover la paquetización de servicios de los operadores DTH/Telecomunicaciones que operan con HISPASAT.
Through agreements with technology providers, HISPASAT provides different triple play solutions compatible with different broadband platforms and operating frequency bands.

3. CORPORATE MARKET

3.1. MOBILITY

Space capacity services for mobility are divided into three main groups in relation to the market goals of each one:
• Maritime: for commercial vessels, fishing boats, oil platforms, etc. In this sector it is worth mentioning the positive contributions of HISPASAT on maritime routes: on the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
• Ground: Trains, buses and other ground transport. In this market it is worth highlighting HISPASAT as a leading provider of mobility solutions in the railway sector.
• Aeronautical: Commercial and military airplanes, UAVs and helicopters.
In each one of the markets, the use of space capacity is highly variable: Internet access services, corporate services, voice, video, emergency communications, telemetry and remote control, among others.
VNO MOBILITY HISPASAT offers VNO (Virtual Network Operator) mobility platform services for mobility clients. The main solution marketed in Europe is based on the iDirect platform with technical services and certification adapted to mobile scenarios. However, other HISPASAT platforms (STM, Gilat) may be used for specific cases in other markets, such as in Latin America.
GO MOBILE
As a complement to the VNO platform for mobility services, HISPASAT, together with several strategic partners, developed the product Go Mobile. Go Mobile is an advanced platform including different services mainly oriented towards train and commercial vessel operators that require a “turnkey” product with a complete service proposal:

• Internet access service: Internet access via satellite which may be combined with other technologies (3G), provided they are available (train service for example).
• VoD: video on demand services stored on internal servers that are updated periodically.
• Video multicast: TV channels broadcasted via satellite, in IP to be distributed to passengers.
• Voice: Cellular Backhaul in mobility. Different solutions based on the scenario (terrestrial, maritime).
• Corporate and security services: emergency networks, corporate VPNs, etc.
• Services portal: enables access, payment and management of content by end users.

Success stories: HISPASAT was chosen by Renfe to provide a connectivity solution via satellite to Spain’s high-speed trains network (AVE). The service is provided through a partnership with Telefónica.
The service includes connectivity for 89 trains, which constitutes 100% of the Spanish high-speed rail network, with a maximum speed of 15Mbps per train. Furthermore, the following services are offered: Internet, TV, VoD, news, games, etc.

3.2. EMERGENCIES

Satellites play a vital role in emergencies. The ability to deploy a critical communications service in a quick and easy manner during a catastrophe makes satellites an ideal means for these types of services.
In this context, there are several scenarios where satellites may be used for emergencies:

• Restoring communications during a catastrophe: In this case, architecture similar to IP trunking or Internet access is often implemented.
• Backhauling of emergency terrestrial networks: Solutions that complement TETRA, 3G-4G, WIMAX services in these scenarios via satellite.
• Communications for mobile units involved in the emergency: this applies to terrestrial, aerial and maritime units.
Through its broadband platforms, HISPASAT offers diverse solutions for clients in the emergency market through its range of ONTIME products.
• ONTIME Easy Deploy: A broadband service solution and easily deployable terminal for the rapid implementation of emergency solutions in the area of operations.
• ONTIME Mobile: An end-to-end solution for clients who use mobile units (vessels, planes).

3.3. INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

HISPASAT offers space capacity services and services managed for telemetry and remote control systems that enable the remote measurement of physical quantities and parameters, and subsequently send information to the system operator. This information is typically sent by wireless communication, in this case via satellite.
In recent years the importance of these systems has increased with the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), which encompasses all sensors, systems and objects connected to the network. In many cases, in these types of networks, the satellite terminal is usually used for the backhauling of other technologies (terrestrial and wireless).
Satellite services in the field of the IoT have several different applications, such as for water basins, wind farms, oil platforms, gas pipelines, oil pipelines, IoT network operators, Smart Cities, etc.

Success stories: HISPASAT provides backhauling services for the SIGFOX network, operated by ABERTIS. With a total of 330 terminals, it makes up 25% of the SIGFOX network in Spain.
